Prepare your map at home
Download mapping for the whole area and check that it opens offline. Carry a paper map and compass, and learn to use them. Agree on your route and return time with someone at home. A saved location helps only if you also understand the surrounding terrain.
Power belongs on the packing list
Charge your phone, head torch and any GPS. Pack backup power with the correct cable and protect equipment from cold and moisture. Test charging at home: a full power bank is little help with the wrong cable.
Agree on communication
A radio, satellite messenger and mobile phone serve different purposes. Check coverage, subscriptions, contacts and how any emergency function works. Equipment does not replace terrain judgement or outdoor skills. Choose an easier outing when unsure.
- Who is told if you are delayed?
- What happens if the group becomes separated?
- Which map and place names will everyone use?
Check before your next trip
- Open offline mapping in flight mode at home.
- Carry a map and compass you know how to use.
- Agree on what your contact should do if you fail to return.
