Pack for your first hunting day

Begin with a short outing alongside someone experienced. This is a starting point for a day trip; winter mountains, overnight trips and Svalbard require additional planning and equipment.

Agree on the plan before packing

Ask the team leader how far you will walk, how long you may wait, how you will communicate and what the group already has. Agree on transport and handling of any harvested game. This avoids both unnecessary duplicates and missing essentials.

Keep essentials accessible

Put rain protection and a warm layer near the top. First aid and a head torch should be reachable without emptying your pack. Protect documents and spare clothing from water. Keep food separate from equipment that has touched game.

  • Documents, hunting permit and necessary permissions.
  • Food, water, warm clothing and a sitting pad.
  • Map, compass, phone, backup power and head torch.
  • First aid, personal medication and a small rubbish bag.

Do a practice pack at home

Lay everything out and check that it works. Walk with the loaded pack and adjust the carrying system. Share group equipment only when responsibility is clear. Firearms, ammunition and transport must follow applicable rules and training; this checklist is not firearm-use instruction.

Check before your next trip

  • Confirm meeting point, communication and return time.
  • Test your head torch and charge electronics.
  • Open New hunters for species-specific needs and rules.
