Clothing and boots: comfortable walking, warm while waiting

Walking and sitting still call for different amounts of insulation. Prepare for both, and try your complete outfit before your hunting day.

Build adjustable layers

A wool or synthetic base layer, an insulating middle layer and an outer layer against wind and rain provide flexibility. Carry extra insulation for stops and waiting. Ventilate or remove a layer before you become soaked in sweat.

Try boots with your actual socks

Wear the socks you intend to use. Your toes need space while your heel should not slide excessively. Try a slope if possible: your toes should not be pushed into the front on descents. Break in new footwear on short walks.

  • Check the fit on both feet.
  • Carry dry spare socks.
  • Choose soles and support for the terrain, not just appearance.

Test movement and access

Sit down, step up and raise your arms. Your jacket should not restrict you when layered underneath. Try pockets and zips with gloves. Visibility clothing should fit over your outer layer and follow your hunting team’s arrangements.

Check before your next trip

  • Take a practice walk wearing the full outfit.
  • Pack a dry layer for waiting or the return journey.
  • Check the forecast and adjust your list that morning.
